“Any Given Psycho”
Writing prompt from http://awesomewritingprompts.tumblr.com/
It wasn't that long ago that we lived in safety, crime was on the decline, drug use was on the decline, and fundamentalism too. Strangely even in what would have seemed like utopia to nineteenth century man, fear was rampant. People feared their neighbors, they feared strangers, and mostly they feared the powerful. That fear was what lead us down the road to where we are, as the twentieth century philosopher wrote "Fear leads to anger, and anger leads to the darkside." While those words were derided as "fiction" in their time, it was the passage of time that proved their veracity.
The event that changed things would have been ignored in another time or place, but with the internet the world could watch these events unfold in real time, and take inspiration(or more fear), from them. It was a bright spring morning on which the world changed.
The sun rose over a cloudless sky in a small suburban neighborhood, the trees and grass were enjoying the breif weeks that the northern California would allow them to be green. As people woke up their screens turned on, information began streaming to four hundred million people. Somewhere in that deluge of packets and inquiries was a link, "They left the door unlocked, what happens next will leave you speechless!" All it took was one click, within minutes thousands of people were looking at a silent video feed of a front door. They watched as a hooded figure approached the door, and for thirty seconds cold green eyes stared into the camera.
Each of those people hit share, and within seconds the video had hundreds of thousand of viewers who watched the green eyed stranger slip in through the door of the home. People waited with baited breath, silently anticipating the forced and put upon "feel good" ending the internet had trained them to expect. Each person reveling in the feeling of queer apprehension, and clicking furiously to share that feeling with everyone they knew. They watched as the figure stole from room to room, avoiding contact with the family of six who went about their morning routine. They gasped when the interloper reached out and nearly touched the young daughter as she went to have cereal in the kitchen.
It began to dawn on the views, all 1.2 million of them by this point, that this was not a happy video. The saw the figure steal into room after room rifling through drawers and closets as the family enjoyed a peaceful breakfast. Communities online began trying to find some way to reach out, to warn the family about the invasion, debates raged on forums and boards. Was it fake? Is it pre-recorded or live? Is there any real danger? What is our responsibility?
